MASTERS TRACK & FIELD
Every four years, the Olympics bring excitement as some of the world’s greatest track and field athletes compete for gold.
The Paris Olympics did not disappoint
The premiere matchup in the distance events was in the men’s 1500 meter final where Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen was set to face Britain’s Josh Kerr, who beat Jakob to take gold at the 2023 World Championships. Ingebrigtsen had done a lot of trash talking before the event, but in the end American Cole Hocker out kicked everyone to take home the gold medal.
The sprints were no less exciting. Brash talking American Noah Lyles edged out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson to win the 100 meter dash. And world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone broke her own world record, again, to win the 400 meter hurdles.
Track and field gets a lot more attention in Europe than in the US outside of the Olympics. So, why bother with Masters Track and Field?
USA Track and Field provides local, regional, and national competition for anyone over age 25. International competition is available for anyone over age 35.
Track and field provides a great way to build cardiovascular endurance and strength. There are no qualifying standards to compete, just your willingness to hit the track or participate in field events.
In Pittsburgh, we have the Three Rivers USA Track and Field Association which schedules local events. You can also join the national USA Track and Field Association to compete in regional and national meets.
Local running groups like Steel City Runners and Fleet Feet often provide running guidance to train for track events.
