SELF-CARE IN 2022: WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

October 22, 2021

We’ve all had a rough ride the last several years during the pandemic. How do we take care of ourselves in this new place where we’ve arrived? My experience is different from yours; the changes to my routines and life are likely different, too. How we care for ourselves will also be different. Each person requires an individualized approach to meet their needs based on their own experiences and life changes. So what does self-care in 2022 mean?

Self-care is not selfish. If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that by taking care of ourselves, we are taking care of others. I can’t help my family, friends or co-workers if I’m not well.

HERE ARE SOME KEY TIPS FOR SELF-CARE IN 2022:

● Schedule time: Set aside specific time each day for yourself. Pick an hour when you have the most energy and give it to yourself: exercise, read, or meditate. Whatever makes you feel best.

● Help someone else: Sometimes reaching out to others in need helps put our own lives in perspective: help out at a food pantry, visit a neighbor, call a family member who might need some support or cheering up. Sometimes not thinking about ourselves is the best self-care.

● Say “No”: Have too much on your plate? A long to-do list? Say “No” with abandon, and a smile. “I’m sorry, I can’t help you right now” may be the best words to say for yourself and the other party asking for something. You can’t put in the proper time and energy to do something when you have multiple commitments.

● Be present: The pandemic has taught us another lesson: we need each other. Social isolation has caused more anxiety and depression. As we navigate this new world, we need to make the most of our social interactions. Put away the phone when having a meal with family or friends. Be present and pay attention to where you are at the moment to make the most of your time with others.

Practice these tips over the next year as we continue to emerge from the pandemic. Self-care is the best care for ourselves and the other people in our lives.
