NEW YEAR, NEW FITNESS APPS

Pittsburgh Fitness Project

With the new year in full swing, many people are off to a fresh start with their healthy resolutions! Whether it be losing a few pounds, getting started in a new fitness routine, or wanting to be healthier in general, there are so many different ways to accomplish this! It may be overwhelming at first to know where to start.

FITNESS APPS: MYFITNESSPAL

One idea is to use fitness apps to help you stay on track. When I was first getting started into eating healthier, I used an app called MyFitnessPal. It has gained popularity in nutrition logging. And it allows people to track their food and to set targets to stick with their nutrition goals. I found this to be helpful for 2 reasons in particular: first of all, it made me be way more accountable with my eating when I had to write it down. Secondly, I was able to make better decisions when I really saw how many calories I was eating.

Being aware of what you are putting into your body is important for weight loss, maintenance, and weight gain (depending on your goals). I gained the ability to get a better idea of what the macronutrient content (how many carbs, fats, and proteins) was in the foods that I ate. Not to mention how much I actually needed to fuel my body.

This app proved to be versatile because different people use it for different reasons. I used it to make sure I was eating sufficient amounts of protein. And my mom used it for weight loss and weight maintenance. She ended up losing 30 pounds and has kept it off for 3 years! Even if you don’t end up using it long term, give this a try! And see if being more aware of your calories and macronutrients make a difference in helping you achieve your nutrition goals!

NIKE TRAINING APP

Another app I used when I was first starting out in the fitness world was the Nike Training App. I used this to do workouts at home on my own when I didn’t belong to a gym. I was able to use what I had, sometimes even just body weight exercises, to work up a sweat and get a workout in! This app had different levels of difficulty, length of training routines, and a variety of muscle groups to choose from. It was definitely a convenient way for me to stay on track on my own and took away the excuses of not having a gym to workout at.

NEW YEAR, STRONGER YOU!

This new year, it is a great time to try new things! However, keep in mind results happen with consistency. Find something that you enjoy doing, stick with it, and I guarantee you that you will see a change.
