In order to prepare, we wanted to give you the low down on the snatch. What even is it? What does it work? Who should do it? And what is it even good for?

WHAT IS THE SNATCH?

The snatch is taking an object (Usually a barbell, dumbbell, or kettlebell)  from the ground to overhead in one movement. Generally, people are most familiar with the barbell version because of the Olympics and more recently Crossfit and related activities.

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

The Snatch is a great exercise to help develop total body power, coordination, and strength.  It can be incorporated into your exercise routine for a variety of reasons.  Most commonly the snatch is used to help a person become more explosive and to learn to use the legs and hips in a coordinated manner. Other reasons include sports specific reasons like Crossfit or the sport of Olympic Style Weightlifting.

WHAT DOES IT WORK?

The snatch works you from head to toe. Primarily the snatch helps develop the legs, butt, hips, and back. It is also a great way to increase flexibility and coordination. For athletes, it also has great carry over for sports that require a quick change of direction movement.

WHO SHOULD SNATCH?

The short answer is anyone who wants to. Most people can benefit in some way from the snatch movement. When done and taught correctly this can be a great and fun way to get a total body workout while learning a new skill and keeping your exercise routine interesting. Even though the snatch is a complicated movement, with the right coaching, you can learn how to snatch in as little as one session.  Although the basics are relatively simple to learn, this is a movement that can take years to truly master. Furthermore, if you find that this is something that interests you, find a coach and dive into this awesome, total body, exercise.
