BLOG GRAPHIC: SHOULD I DO A DIGITAL DETOX. Image of woman at gym on phone.

We’re all guilty of being tied to our phones. These mini-computers keep us informed about the world around us, let us maintain contact with family and friends, and provide entertainment. Other screens like laptops and TVs can also dominate a lot of our time.

But when is it too much?

I see a lot of teenagers in my practice who are up late at night texting friends or playing games on an Ipad or phone. That late night activity leads to sleep disruption and impaired functioning the next day.  Teens are also prone to experience cyberbullying.

Excess smartphone use can also lead to more stress and anxiety with constant notifications and updates.

Do you need to do a digital detox? If you find yourself distracted by your phone during the day or are up late texting or scrolling through YouTube late into the night, consider these steps for a digital detox.

Turn off push notifications

These notifications may provide information, but more often, they’re just distracting. Turn off push notifications so you can be more present to those around you or with what you are doing.

Put away your phone during meals

Phones can distract from social interactions when eating with others. Some studies have also found that phone use during meals increases how much we eat.

Make your sleep space tech-free

We’ve already talked about how phones can interfere with sleep. Use an alarm clock if you need something to wake you up in the morning. Most sleep experts recommend low light, a relaxing bedtime routine, and a tech-free zone to help with quality sleep.

Schedule some tech-free time every day

Pick a few hours each day where you put your phone or laptop away. We already talked about meal time. How about when you exercise? Set aside some time to read every day, visit a neighbor in need, or do some house chores. Give your brain a break from your phone and other screens during these times.

Limit social media accounts

You probably don’t need to be connected across multiple platforms. Limit time to a specific one and carefully choose who you follow and like to lessen distractions.

Try these tips with a friend!

Try some of these tips if you think it’s time for a digital detox, and see if you can convince family and friends to join you in this endeavor. Support in your community of family and friends will make it easier!
