PANDEMIC HABITS: SOME ARE WORTH KEEPING

Pittsburgh Fitness Project

Social distancing restrictions forced us to find new ways to maintain our well-being. Chances are, you had to significantly change your routine and adopt some new pandemic habits – some good, some not so good. As things start to return to normal – albeit a new normal, it provides us an opportunity to examine some of the “pandemic habits” that you want to keep, and those that you want to kick. That being said, here are some healthy habits worth continuing after we move on from pandemic life.

PANDEMIC HABITS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KEEP

GETTING OUTSIDE

Many people turned to the outdoors as a way to leave the house, or get a break from their desk during the day. Spending more time in nature is a great way to boost not only your physical health but mental health as well. So if you find your schedule starts to get busier or you’re no longer working from home, consider setting aside dedicated time for fresh air. That can include taking a short walk around the block, planning your workout outside instead of in the gym, or something as simple as taking your lunch break outside.

PRIORITIZING SELF CARE

It’s safe to say that the pandemic took a toll on our mental health and wellbeing. Many have realized the importance of practicing self-care as a way to de-stress and relax during stressful times.

Pandemic Habit Tip: The best way to practice self-care is to make sure you have the time for it. Sometimes when we feel our schedules are too packed, self-care can go right out the window. Remember to set aside time for yourself to do things that help you unwind and recharge.

CHALLENGING YOURSELF AND TRY SOMETHING NEW

With more time to yourself, perhaps you took this as an opportunity to learn something new, practice some old skills or take on some new challenges. If you’ve found something that you enjoy doing during the lockdown, be sure to keep it up!

SLOWING DOWN

Quarantine made many of us realize just how rushed our everyday lives really are. With a little more downtime, the value of priorities outside of work and appointments became more apparent. This can be things like getting a little extra sleep, spending more time with family, and doing the things that you enjoy during your downtime. Bottom line, don’t feel bad to set aside time to “slow down” every now then. It can do wonders for your well-being and mood.

APPRECIATING THE LITTLE THINGS

What did you miss the most during lockdown? For many, the pandemic created a sense of appreciation for the simple, everyday things that they may have previously taken for granted.

Pandemic Habit Tip: One way to help you find daily appreciation is to write a gratitude list. Listing the things you’re grateful for each day is a great way to add some positive perspective.

STAYING CONNECTED TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY

For many, the pandemic has encouraged them to reach out to family and friends more often, whether it’s regular calls over zoom or reaching out just to check-in. Many had the opportunity to spend more quality time with family. The pandemic made us really take a look at our close relationship and for many resulted in an increased sense of gratitude and compassion for the important people in their lives.

WHAT PANDEMIC HABITS ARE YOU KEEPING?

The pandemic changed our lives in many ways. This past year and a half has been incredibly tough, even devastating for many. As we enter our new “normal”, try to reflect on any positive changes, things you’ve learned, and/or habits you’ve made that have made a positive impact. How can you make those positive pandemic habits a part of your everyday life? What habits do you plan to keep?
