GIFT-GIVING
Last week, we recognized Giving Tuesday. It’s a time around the holidays when we celebrate supporting various causes in our communities and around the world through charitable donations.
But what other ways can we engage in gift-giving? Let’s look at some other ways to give a gift without using monetary means.
Give Your Time
Spending time with a family member or friend can be a great gift. That’s especially true for those who may be confined to their homes or long- term care facilities due to age or illness.
Setting aside an hour each week for someone in these circumstances can be an invaluable form of gift-giving during the holiday season and beyond.
Provide a Service
How about shoveling your neighbor’s sidewalk following a snowstorm? Or just holding the door for someone as you enter a store? Do a chore for a neighbor or loved one.
These small acts of charity each day can make a difference for someone, often without us knowing how it may help brighten a tough day.
You can also volunteer at an organization, providing your expertise or life experience for your community.
Foster a Pet
Animal shelters sometimes need temporary homes for animals. Consider providing support for some lovable critter by fostering a pet before they find their forever home.
Become a Mentor
Organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters are always looking for mentors. Consider joining a community organization to mentor young people who may be looking for guidance.
Also think about professional mentorship. You can help people prep for interviews, write resumes, or introduce someone to build professional connections.
Donate Clothes
Organizations like Dress for Success provide women with gently used work clothes as they enter the workforce.
Also consider items for your local homeless shelter, Salvation Army, or Goodwill.
Other Gifts for the Holidays
There are many other ways to provide gift-giving during the holiday season.
Consider the gift of fitness or relaxation at PFP for a loved one this upcoming year by giving a pack of exercise classes or a massage.
Whatever form of gift-giving you choose to do, enjoy the holiday season and your time with family, friends, and your community.
