At the start of the new year, many of us set intentions to improve our fitness and wellbeing. As time goes on, it can become quite easy to fall into some common pitfalls. In fact, most resolutions get dropped by the second week of the year! As you get back on track, the key is to focus on goals that are realistic, sustainable, and designed for long-term success.

Let’s talk about some common pitfalls and tips for staying on track with your fitness journey in 2025.

1. Setting Unrealistic Goals

Setting ambitious goals is great, but it's equally important to set yourself up for success throughout the journey. Break down your larger goals into smaller, process-oriented milestones. This approach not only makes the journey more enjoyable but also helps you build lasting habits and make consistent progress. While big goals can keep you motivated, focusing solely on them without celebrating the smaller victories along the way can lead to burnout or frustration.

What to do: Instead of aiming for drastic changes, break your goals down into smaller, achievable steps. For example, commit to 2-4 workouts per week instead of a daily commitment that can easily drain you and become unrealistic to maintain. Focus on building good habits and making steady progress, whether that’s increasing your strength, improving your cardiovascular fitness, or simply staying consistent.

2. Focusing Too Much on Quick Results

The desire for fast results can make it easy to lose patience if progress seems slow. Fitness is a long-term journey. It takes time and consistency to see the benefits.

What to do: Try shifting your focus from results to long-term progress. It’s easy to miss the subtle improvements when you're focused on the bigger picture, so be sure to celebrate the smaller wins—they are just as important, and they add up! Training is all about consistent growth over time, so keep moving and try to appreciate the journey.

3. Skipping Rest and Recovery

Pushing yourself is great, but it’s just as important to prioritize rest and recovery. Without sufficient rest, your progress can suffer in the long term, leading to burnout, exhaustion, and loss of motivation. Plus, your muscles need time to recover and grow stronger, especially when lifting weights.

What to do: Make recovery a priority by scheduling a minimum of one to two rest days per week. High-intensity training has its place, but it should be balanced with other types of training. Active recovery, like stretching, walking, or yoga, can keep you moving on active rest days. Listen to your body—if you’re feeling sore or tired, take the time to rest. Recovery is just as important as training. (Enjoy your recovery by booking a massage with our awesome massage therapists!)

4. Not Having a Plan

It’s hard to stay motivated when you don’t have a clear direction. This makes it easy to lose focus, skip essential exercises, or overwork certain areas while neglecting others. A solid plan helps you stay on track, ensuring that each workout is setting you up to reach your specific goals.

What to do: Whether you’re working with a trainer or building your own routine, go in with a plan that targets different aspects of your goals. Having a structured plan keeps you on track, ensures balanced progress, and makes your gym time more effective.

5. Overlooking Mental Wellness

Fitness isn’t only about physical strength; mental and emotional wellbeing are just as important. It's easy to get caught up in the physical aspects of training and forget to check in with how you’re thinking and feeling.

What to do: Recognize and appreciate the progress you’re making—both physically and mentally. Stay patient with yourself and focus on building resilience. It's okay to have days off and it's okay if your routine gets interrupted from time to time.  What's important is to be consistent overall and keep showing up for yourself.
