TIPS TO GET STARTED WITH WEIGHTLIFTING
Finding a Coach
While it’s possible to be successful in the sport of weightlifting without a coach, having someone who can provide optimal programming, technique, feedback, and cueing to you will allow you to focus more on just training and can help you learn a lot about the sport.
Trust the Process
It can be difficult not to progress at the rate that you wish you could, but weightlifting is a long-term sport and cannot be rushed. Take your time and enjoy training and competing…each and every step of the way.
Train with Better Lifters
You can learn a lot just by watching lifters with more experience than you. Remember, iron sharpens iron
Find a Weightlifting Gym
Depending on the area you live, weightlifting gyms might not be accessible to you, but if at all possible, find one, as having the proper equipment and area to train in will greatly improve your weightlifting experience and will get you more familiar with how it feels to lift using bumper plates, jerk blocks, and racks.
Talk to Coaches & Athletes
This sport has a community, and becoming a part of it will be a wonderful thing. Being able to discuss training with others and meeting other teams can help you build connections with other gyms.
Setting Realistic Goals
Your goal-setting is entirely dependent on how invested you are in the sport, your age, and your health. Keep all of these in mind; don’t underestimate yourself, but also try not to set goals that are a bit too lofty.
